We all know the preteen years can be about "testing the waters". Many kids are experimenting with their use of undesirable language. They are probably testing out these new words with other kids on the basketball court or on the school bus. It's all about being "cool" and trying to fit in. Now is a great time to talk to your tween about what words you find offensive. Different families have different limits as to what type of language is acceptable and unacceptable and it's important to define those boundaries with your child. I read a really great article about kids and swearing, "Help Your Teen Clean Up His Language". It's always smart to set a good example of what we expect our children to do. Your child probably does not really want to be labeled by this negative habit even though they may say "everyone does it" or "the cool kids do it".
